THE ULTIMATE GOAL OF GAINING KNOWLEDGE IN MUSIC

The Art of Discrimination in Music

Primarily, the listener must learn to distinguish between the musical sound-space and the motif-space, between the motif-space and the sequence-space, and between the sequence-space and the harmony-space. So, he must learn to distinguish between the relative musical force-fields.

Discrimination of the Musical Force-Fields

Moreover, the listener must learn to distinguish within the relative musical force-fields themselves, which means within the musical sound-space, within the motif-space, within the sequence-space, and within the absolute musical force-field of the harmony. He must learn to distinguish within the limited musical worlds within space and time, and in the unlimited musical world without space and time.

Discrimination within the Musical Force-Fields

The music listener can achieve these two kinds of discrimination only by perceiving the perfect fundamental vibration of the absolute sound-substance right into the absolute musical force-field of the harmony. To this end, he must perceive the cosmic vibration in his tools of cognition – in his mind, in his intellect, in his feeling and understanding, and in his sense of hearing.
